When skin is exposed more to the sun, there is an increase in the production of cells known as melanocytes and due to this the skin turns darker. These dark skin patches are known as brown spots, age spots, dark spots, sun spots and liver spots. Brown spots generally appear on exposed skin areas like the face, back, neck, chest, shoulders and hands. Some of the main causes of brown spots are sun exposure, aging, genetics, menopause, pregnancy, stress, improper skincare, weak liver, hyper-pigmentation of the skin, lack of vitamin C or B12, smoking, cancer, dermatitis, and diabetes and so on. Brown spots are harmless but as these spots can make one look ugly, people look for ways to get rid of them as soon as possible. To lighten brown spots, there are a few easy and simple natural treatments that you can try at home. Here are top 10 ways to get rid of Brown Spots on Skin..

Lemon Juice

Lemons have got bleaching property that can help to get rid of brown spots. You can simply apply fresh lemon juice directly to the affected area; leave it for half an hour before rinsing it off with cold water. You must repeat this remedy daily twice for about two months to notice positive results. Those having sensitive skin must dilute the lemon juice with water, rosewater, or honey and then apply it on the affected area. Another option is to dissolve some sugar in lemon juice and then apply the mixture to the affected area. Leave it on for a half hour and then rinse it off. Soon you will get rid of age spots.

Onion Juice

Another easy way to get rid of age spots is to apply onion juice. Simply slice up some onions and rub the slices over the affected area two to three times a day. The acidic nature and the bleaching property present in onion will help the brown spots to fade. Another option is to make mix one tablespoon of onion juice with two tablespoons of honey and then apply the mixture on the affected area for about fifteen minutes. Finally wash your face thoroughly so that the strong smell of the mixture goes off. Along with onion juice you can also try garlic juice.

Red Currants

You can also try red currants to get rid of brown spots. Take one forth cup of mashed unripe red currants and mix it with one tablespoon of pure honey. Apply this mixture on your affected skin area and leave it on for half an hour. Finally rinse it off with warm water and apply some diluted fresh lemon juice. Another option is to make a mixture with equal amounts of red currant juice, lemon juice, orange juice and parsley juice. Applying with mixture on the affected skin area once daily will help to get rid of your brown spots.

Papaya

There are certain enzymes present in papaya that can help in removing age spots, skin blemishes, acne and so on. Take one tablespoon of fresh raw papaya in grated form and rub it on the brown spots. Leave it for about twenty minutes before washing the area with lukewarm water. Once done the skin will have a cleaner and brighter look. Repeat this remedy twice daily until the brown spots fades away. As some people can be allergic to papaya it is advisable to do a twenty four patch test before following this remedy.

Horseradish

Horseradish is a fantastic herb that helps remove age spots and freckles and makes your skin spotless. You can make horseradish paste and apply it directly to the skin. Another option is to mix grated horseradish with either apple cider vinegar or buttermilk in a glass container and allow the mixture to sit for two weeks. After two weeks, strain the mixture and then with the help of a cotton ball apply it on the affected skin area. Follow this remedy three times a day for at least one month and soon the brown spots and freckles will fade away.

Sandalwood

Sandalwood is also an anti-aging agent and an antiseptic, which can help to get rid of brown spots. You can make homemade pack with sandalwood powder, rose water, glycerin, and lemon juice. Apply this pack onto the black spots and allow it to dry naturally. Use cold water to wash it off. Do this once daily to eliminate dark spots or age spots on skin. Along with this massage the affected area with sandalwood oil daily before going to bed and leave it overnight.

Castor Oil

Castor oil has got strong healing properties and can be used effectively to get rid of brown spots or age spots. With the help of cotton ball apply castor oil to the affected area once in the morning and once at night and gently massage it. Follow this remedy without any fail to help the brown spots fade to fade and to make the skin tone even. Along with castor oil you can also use Vitamin E oil, coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil to cure brown spots on skin.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is excellent for healing minor burns and can also be used to get rid of brown spots. Take fresh aloe vera gel and rub it gently on the spots. Leave it on for about half an hour before washing the area with cold water. Repeat the process twice daily and within a month you can notice positive improvement. In case fresh aloe vera gel is not available then you can opt for aloe vera juice which you can easily buy from the market. At the same time you can also drink two tablespoon of aloe vera juice daily on an empty stomach to enjoy healthy skin.

Yogurt

Yogurt is a safe and easy way to lighten brown age spots naturally. Take some plain yogurt and apply it directly onto age spots and leave it to dry for about twenty minutes before rinsing it off with cold water. For faster result you can apply yogurt on the affected area before going to bed and leave it overnight. Alternatively you can make pack at home by combining one tablespoon plain yogurt, two tablespoon ground oatmeal and one teaspoon fresh lemon juice. Apply this mixture onto the age spots and allow it to sit for half an hour and then rinse it off with cold water. After this apply some moisturizer. Follow this remedy daily for one to two months until the brown spots have faded.

Buttermilk

Buttermilk contains lactic acid that is highly beneficial to the skin. So, when it comes to brown spots you can always rely on buttermilk. Take sour milk or buttermilk and apply it to your brown spots with a cotton swab and leave it on the skin for a few minutes before washing the area with plain water. With time the brown spots will start to fade. Those having oily skin or suffering from acne can use buttermilk and adding a little bit of lemon juice in it. Another option is to mix four teaspoons of buttermilk and two teaspoons of tomato juice together and then apply this mixture on the affected skin.
